Tsunami and Iraq

Hey, Help me think this through. What if the recent
tsunami disaster actual gave the United States of
America a golden opportunity to not only withdraw
honorably from the war in Iraq, but restore, or if you
prefer, enhance our image and credibility in the
world? For the moment, what would happen if our
commander in chief moved our magnificent
army--lock stock a barrel from Iraq to the tsunami
disaster area to put its full weight of organization and
equipment to work aiding in the massive humanitarian
effort there. Our military engineers are among the
world's best and they are the perfect personel to lead
the massive effort to transport the relief supplies, and
food, clean-up and rebuild the basic roads and
infrastructure. We could move the hospitals and
medical personnel into the areas where needed. This
alone could potentially save tens of thousand lives.
Our magnificent men and women in our armed forces
could be, at least for the moment, dedicated to the
preservation of human life. How rejuvenating that
would have to be for the morale of our troops. We
could spend just half of what we will spend killing
people in Iraq, say 35 billion this year, or we could
spend the whole 70 billion, it would be worth it. If
we can afford the war we can surely afford this
humanitarian effort. We could leave Iraq, leaving
those people to elect a representative government.
They would have our promise that we would help
rebuild what we have broken, but that we must set
priorities and right now the world needs our help
more in the Indian ocean than in Iraq, and that they
are going to have to take some responsibility for their
own country. They were, after all, the worlds most
advanced civilization for over 500 years. If they
continue to kill one another and sink into civil war
then we would be forced to ask the rest of the world
to help them get their house in order at a later date. A
request that would be difficult for any nation to refuse
after we make such a huge and world shaking gesture
of good will to the 11 nations so desperate for our
immediate help. An effort of this scale would place
our country forever in the pantheon of Great and
benificent nations. World humanity would, forever,
have this shining example of man’s best, most selfless
act of kindness. I’m convinced President Bush would
win a Nobel Peace prize if he would take this action.
Why would this not only extricate us from the mire in
the middle East, but also restore the honor and dignity
of our nation in the eyes of the world? Regardless of
religion, it seems to me to be the right thing to do. I
would even be willing to forgo my tax cut if we could
pull this gesture together. Let us move all of our
helicopters to where they can do some good for the
people of the world. OK your turn, let me know why
I'm naive or just plain stupid. Could this idea work,
what refinements have to be made? Let me know
what you think.
